Applebee’s is a comfortable bar and restaurant that focuses on its casual dining atmosphere. They serve up mainstream American dishes such as salads, shrimp, chicken and pasta. Random fact about Applebee’s Restaurants – On November 29, 2007 the Applebee’s company was bought by IHOP (now DineEquity) for $2.1 billion.
Bill and T.J. Palmer opened the first of many restaurants. The first restaurant was called T.J. Applebee’s Rx for Edibles & Elixirs. The first location opened up in 1980 in Atlanta, GA.
In just three years the restaurant was doing so well that they had an investor, W.R. Grace and Company, who wanted to buy the company. Bill Palmer would begin opening more Applebee’s locations in 1985 when he began opening the first franchised Applebee’s locations.
The name of the restaurants were changed to Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar. This new name reflected Bill Palmer’s original plan for the restaurant to be a place that “people could call their own”.
Applebee’s began a rapid expansion in the 1990′s after the company went public in 1989 under the name Applebee’s International, Inc., (A.I.I.). By 1992 there were over 250 restaurants and they continued growth to open their 1,000th location in 1998. Today there are over 2,000 Applebee’s locations in throughout the United States, one US territory and 14 other countries.
Applebee’s Menu Items
The Applebee’s menu has grown a lot over the years, but they still have some of their famous items that remain on the menu including the riblets and special appetizers. New items come and go as they try to expand the menu and bring in promotional recipes at different times of the year.

Applebee’s likes to sample new ingredients into their menus during different seasons. Some regulars on the salad menus are the Oriental Chicken Salad and the Santa Fe Chicken Salad.
Lots of people know Applebee’s for their appetizers. Many locations have half price appetizers during happy hours. You can get a sampler if you want to try it all or get anything including Buffalo chicken wings, spinach and artichoke dip, onion rings, sliders, or quesadillas.
